Rosebank distillery

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Rosebank Distillery is a historic distillery located in Falkirk, Scotland. It was established in 1840 and is known for producing single malt Scotch whisky using a unique triple distillation process. The distillery was mothballed in 1993 but has plans to reopen in 2022.

History[edit | edit source]

The Rosebank Distillery was founded by James Robertson in 1840, although there were records of distilling activity in the area as early as 1817. The distillery was named after the roses that grew along the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, which ran alongside the distillery. The canal played a crucial role in the distillery's early success, allowing for easy transportation of raw materials and finished products.

In 1914, the distillery was acquired by Scottish Malt Distillers, who continued the tradition of triple distillation. However, the distillery was mothballed in 1993 due to the high cost of production and the economic downturn. The distillery buildings were sold off and some were demolished.

In 2017, Ian Macleod Distillers purchased the Rosebank brand and remaining stocks of whisky. They announced plans to reopen the distillery, with production expected to start in 2022.

Production[edit | edit source]

The Rosebank Distillery is known for its unique triple distillation process, which is unusual for Scottish whisky. This process, also used by some Irish whiskey distilleries, produces a lighter and smoother spirit.

The distillery uses locally sourced barley, which is malted and then milled. The milled barley is mixed with hot water in a mash tun to extract the sugars. This liquid, known as wort, is then fermented in wooden washbacks to produce a beer-like liquid called wash. The wash is distilled three times in copper pot stills to produce the final spirit.

Products[edit | edit source]

The Rosebank Distillery produces a range of single malt Scotch whiskies. The most famous is the Rosebank 12 Year Old, which is known for its light, floral character and smooth finish. Other expressions include the Rosebank 21 Year Old and the Rosebank 30 Year Old, which are highly sought after by collectors.
