German wine grape variety

Rotberger is a red wine grape variety that was created in Germany in the early 20th century. It is known for producing light, fruity wines with a distinctive character.

History[edit | edit source]

Rotberger was developed by Heinrich Birk at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in 1928. It is a cross between the Schiava Grossa (also known as Trollinger) and Riesling grape varieties. The aim was to create a grape that combined the fruity characteristics of Schiava Grossa with the acidity and aromatic qualities of Riesling.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Rotberger is a relatively early-ripening variety, which makes it suitable for cultivation in cooler climates. It is known for its resistance to certain vine diseases, although it can be susceptible to powdery mildew. The grape clusters are typically small to medium-sized, with a compact structure.

Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Rotberger grapes are typically light in color and body, with a fresh and fruity profile. They often exhibit flavors of red berries, such as raspberry and strawberry, and can have floral notes. The wines are usually best consumed young and are often enjoyed as a refreshing summer wine.

Regions[edit | edit source]

Rotberger is primarily grown in Germany, particularly in the Rheingau and Mosel wine regions. It is not as widely planted as other German varieties, but it is appreciated for its unique flavor profile and versatility.
