Royal Marsden Hospital
Royal Marsden Hospital is a specialist cancer treatment hospital in London, United Kingdom. Founded in 1851 by William Marsden, it was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the study and treatment of cancer. The hospital is renowned for its research, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, and is a leader in oncological care. It operates from two sites: one in Chelsea, London, and the other in Sutton, Surrey. The Royal Marsden, along with its associated Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, provides a wide range of cancer services, including surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.
History[edit | edit source]
The Royal Marsden was established after William Marsden found a young girl dying on the steps of St. Andrew's Church, unable to gain admission to any of London's hospitals. Motivated by this experience, Marsden founded the Free Cancer Hospital (later renamed The Royal Marsden) to provide care to cancer patients regardless of their financial circumstances. The hospital has since grown into one of the world's foremost cancer treatment and research facilities.

The Royal Marsden Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to provide comprehensive care for cancer patients. Its services include genetic testing, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery, as well as specialized clinics for different types of cancer. The hospital is also home to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which supports the hospital's research and care initiatives.
Research and Education[edit | edit source]
The Royal Marsden plays a pivotal role in cancer research, working closely with the Institute of Cancer Research. Together, they form one of the largest comprehensive cancer centres in Europe. The hospital is involved in numerous clinical trials aiming to improve cancer treatment and care. Additionally, it offers educational programs and training for healthcare professionals in oncology.
