Rubroboletus pulcherrimus

Rubroboletus pulcherrimus is a species of mushroom in the family Boletaceae. It is commonly known as the beautiful bolete due to its striking appearance. This mushroom is characterized by its vibrant red cap, yellow pores, and stout stem.

Description[edit | edit source]

The cap of Rubroboletus pulcherrimus can reach up to 15 centimeters in diameter and is initially convex before flattening out with age. It is bright red in color and has a velvety texture. The pores underneath the cap are initially yellow but turn olive-green as the mushroom matures. The stem is thick and often tapers towards the base.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Rubroboletus pulcherrimus is typically found in coniferous forests, especially in association with pine trees. It prefers acidic soils and is commonly found in North America and Europe.

Edibility[edit | edit source]

While Rubroboletus pulcherrimus is not considered toxic, it is not widely consumed due to its bitter taste and tough texture. It is not recommended for culinary use.

Similar Species[edit | edit source]

Rubroboletus pulcherrimus is closely related to other boletes in the genus Rubroboletus, such as Rubroboletus satanas and Rubroboletus legaliae. These species share similar characteristics but can be distinguished based on subtle differences in coloration and morphology.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

The conservation status of Rubroboletus pulcherrimus is currently unknown. However, like many mushroom species, it may be vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change.
