Rudolf Seiters (born 13 October 1937) is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). He served as the Minister of the Interior from 1991 to 1993 and as the Chief of the Chancellery from 1989 to 1991 under Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Seiters was a member of the Bundestag from 1972 to 2002.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Rudolf Seiters was born in Osnabrück, Germany, on 13 October 1937. He studied law at the University of Münster.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Seiters joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1958. He was first elected to the Bundestag in the 1972 federal election and served continuously until 2002.
Chief of the Chancellery[edit | edit source]
In 1989, Seiters was appointed as the Chief of the Chancellery by Chancellor Helmut Kohl. In this role, he was responsible for coordinating the work of the federal government and liaising between the Bundestag and the Chancellor.
Minister of the Interior[edit | edit source]
Seiters became the Minister of the Interior on 26 November 1991, succeeding Wolfgang Schäuble. His tenure was marked by significant events, including the handling of the aftermath of German reunification and the rise of right-wing extremism. He resigned from the position on 4 July 1993 following the Bad Kleinen incident, where a police operation against the Red Army Faction went wrong.
Later Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the cabinet, Seiters continued to serve as a member of the Bundestag until 2002. He was also involved in various charitable organizations and served as the president of the German Red Cross from 2003 to 2017.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Seiters is married and has three children. He resides in Osnabrück.
