Runza (restaurant)
Runza is a regional fast food restaurant chain specializing in ethnic cuisine with a focus on German-Russian dishes, particularly the runza sandwich. The chain is based in Nebraska, United States, where it was founded in 1949 by Alex Brening. The runza sandwich, a dough bread pocket with a filling of beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings, is a traditional recipe of the German-Russian immigrants in the United States. Over the years, Runza has expanded its menu to include other items such as burgers, fries, and salads, but the runza sandwich remains its signature item.
History[edit | edit source]
The first Runza restaurant was opened in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Alex Brening. The concept was based on a family recipe for the runza sandwich, which Brening believed would appeal to a wide audience. The idea proved successful, and the restaurant quickly gained popularity in the local community. Over the decades, Runza has expanded throughout Nebraska and into neighboring states, including Colorado, Iowa, and Kansas. Despite its expansion, the company has remained family-owned and operated, with a strong commitment to quality and community involvement.
Menu[edit | edit source]
The centerpiece of Runza's menu is the runza sandwich, which comes in various flavors, including original, cheese, mushroom and Swiss, and spicy. In addition to the traditional runza, the restaurant offers a wide range of fast food items, such as hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and a variety of sides. Seasonal menu items and regional specialties are also featured throughout the year.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Runza Restaurants hold a special place in the cultural landscape of Nebraska and the surrounding region. The runza sandwich itself is a link to the German-Russian heritage of many of the area's settlers. The restaurant chain is also known for its involvement in local communities, supporting schools, sports teams, and charitable organizations.
Locations[edit | edit source]
As of the last update, Runza operates over 80 locations across four states. The majority of these are in Nebraska, with the chain's presence also growing in Colorado, Iowa, and Kansas. Each location is designed to reflect the local community's character while maintaining the brand's distinctive identity.
