S. Minwel Tibbott


S. Minwel Tibbott (1928–1996) was a prominent Welsh folklorist and researcher, best known for her extensive work on traditional Welsh food and cookery. She was a key figure in the preservation and promotion of Welsh culinary heritage.

S. Minwel Tibbott was born in 1928 in Wales. She pursued her education in the field of folklore studies, developing a keen interest in the cultural traditions of her native country.

Career[edit | edit source]

Tibbott began her career at the Welsh Folk Museum (now known as St Fagans National Museum of History) in 1969. She was tasked with the responsibility of researching traditional Welsh cookery, a subject that had not been extensively explored before.

Tibbott's research involved travelling across Wales, interviewing elderly women and documenting their recipes and cooking methods. These recipes often dated back generations, providing a unique insight into traditional Welsh culinary practices.

Her work led to the creation of the museum's historic kitchen exhibits, where visitors can experience traditional Welsh cooking methods first-hand. Tibbott also authored several books on the subject, including 'Welsh Fare' and 'Traditional Foods of Wales'.
