The SS Binnendijk was a cargo ship operated by the Holland America Line. Built in 1921, the ship was primarily used for transatlantic trade routes, transporting goods between Europe and North America. The SS Binnendijk met its fate during the early years of World War II, when it struck a mine and sank off the coast of England in 1939.

Design and Construction[edit | edit source]

The SS Binnendijk was constructed in 1921 by the renowned shipbuilding company, Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The ship was designed as a general cargo vessel, equipped to handle a variety of goods. It featured a steel hull, a single screw propeller, and was powered by a triple-expansion steam engine, which was typical for cargo ships of that era.

Operational History[edit | edit source]

Upon its completion, the SS Binnendijk was commissioned by the Holland America Line, a major shipping company known for its passenger and cargo services. The ship was primarily engaged in the transatlantic trade, carrying goods such as machinery, textiles, and agricultural products between Europe and the United States.

During its operational life, the SS Binnendijk was noted for its reliability and efficiency, contributing significantly to the commercial success of the Holland America Line. The ship's routes often included stops at major ports such as Rotterdam, New York City, and Liverpool.

Sinking[edit | edit source]

In 1939, as tensions in Europe escalated into World War II, the SS Binnendijk continued its commercial operations. However, on October 7, 1939, while en route from Rotterdam to New York City, the ship struck a mine laid by a German submarine off the coast of Portland Bill, England. The explosion caused significant damage, and despite efforts to save the vessel, it sank shortly thereafter.

Fortunately, the crew was able to abandon ship, and there were no casualties. The sinking of the SS Binnendijk highlighted the dangers faced by merchant vessels during wartime, as naval mines and submarine warfare posed significant threats to commercial shipping.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The wreck of the SS Binnendijk remains a site of interest for maritime historians and divers. It serves as a reminder of the perils of maritime trade during wartime and the impact of naval warfare on civilian shipping.
