Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. It is situated on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary and historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the county of Lancashire.

Liverpool's origins date back to 1207 when it was granted a royal charter by King John. The city grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming a major port for the transatlantic slave trade and later for the emigration of people to the United States and Australia.
19th Century[edit | edit source]
During the 19th century, Liverpool was a major port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to the United States. The city's wealth was built on the cotton, sugar, and slave trades. The Industrial Revolution brought further prosperity, and Liverpool became a leading city of the British Empire.
