Everton Football Club is a professional football club based in Liverpool, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Founded in 1878, Everton has a long and storied history, having won nine First Division/Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
History[edit | edit source]
Everton was founded as St. Domingo's F.C. in 1878 so that people from the parish of St. Domingo's Methodist Church could play a sport other than cricket in the summer. The club was renamed Everton in November 1879 after the surrounding area.
Everton was a founding member of the Football League in 1888 and won their first league championship in the 1890–91 season. The club has a long-standing rivalry with Liverpool F.C., and matches between the two teams are known as the Merseyside derby.
Stadium[edit | edit source]
Everton's home ground is Goodison Park, located in the Walton area of Liverpool. The stadium has been the club's home since 1892 and has a capacity of 39,414. Plans are underway for a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which is expected to open in the coming years.
Supporters and Culture[edit | edit source]
Everton has a large and passionate fan base, known as the "Evertonians." The club's supporters are known for their loyalty and have a strong presence both in Liverpool and around the world. The club's nickname, "The Toffees," is believed to have originated from a local toffee shop that was popular with fans in the early 20th century.
