Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Nicknamed "the Red Devils," the club was founded as Newton Heath LYR F.C. in 1878, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902, and moved to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

Manchester United was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR F.C. by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's department. The club faced financial difficulties in 1902 and was saved by investment from local brewery owner John Henry Davies, who changed the club's name to Manchester United. The club won its first Football League First Division title in 1908 and its first FA Cup in 1909.
Success under Sir Matt Busby[edit | edit source]
The club's most successful period came under the management of Sir Matt Busby, who took over in 1945. Busby led the team to numerous trophies, including five league titles and two FA Cups. The club also became the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968, defeating S.L. Benfica in the final.
The Alex Ferguson Era[edit | edit source]
Sir Alex Ferguson became the manager in 1986 and transformed Manchester United into one of the most successful clubs in the world. Under Ferguson, the club won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. The club also won the Intercontinental Cup in 1999 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.

After Ferguson's retirement in 2013, the club has seen several managerial changes and varying degrees of success. Managers such as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær have all had stints at the club. The current manager is Erik ten Hag, who took over in 2022.

Manchester United's home ground is Old Trafford, a stadium with a seating capacity of 74,140. Known as the "Theatre of Dreams," it has been the club's home since 1910, except for an eight-year period following the Second World War when the stadium was bombed, and the club played its home games at Maine Road.
