The region's industrial history is reflected in the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Saarland's economy has traditionally been dominated by coal mining and steel production, but in recent years it has diversified. Today, the state has a strong service sector, with significant contributions from information technology, automotive industry, and healthcare. The Saarland University is also a major employer and contributes to the region's research and development efforts.

The state's cuisine is a blend of German and French influences, with dishes like Lyoner sausage and Dibbelabbes, a potato dish. The region is also known for its wine production, particularly the Elbling grape variety.
