Safaprodil

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Safaprodil is a drug that acts as an antagonist for the NMDA receptor, and was developed for the treatment of stroke. It has neuroprotective effects and was researched for potential use in the treatment of cerebral ischemia, which can result from stroke. However, it did not progress beyond phase II clinical trials.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Safaprodil acts as an antagonist at the NMDA receptor, a type of glutamate receptor that is important in the transmission of electrical signals in the brain. By blocking this receptor, safaprodil can reduce the amount of damage caused by the overexcitation of neurons that occurs during a stroke.

Clinical trials[edit | edit source]

Safaprodil was investigated in phase II clinical trials for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. However, the development of the drug was discontinued before it reached phase III trials.
