Saint-Émilion is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is one of the principal red wine areas of the Bordeaux wine region, and its vineyards are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History[edit | edit source]

Saint-Émilion has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. The town was named after the monk Émilion, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock during the 8th century. His followers began the tradition of wine production in the area.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Saint-Émilion is located on the right bank of the Dordogne River, about 35 kilometers northeast of Bordeaux. The region is characterized by its limestone plateau, which provides excellent drainage and contributes to the unique terroir of the wines produced here.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

The wines of Saint-Émilion are predominantly made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. The region is known for its complex and age-worthy red wines. The classification of Saint-Émilion wines is updated every ten years, with the top tier being Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Saint-Émilion is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historic architecture, underground cellars, and wine tours. Notable landmarks include the Monolithic Church of Saint-Émilion, the Cloisters of the Collegiate Church, and the King's Tower.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Saint-Émilion is heavily reliant on viticulture and wine tourism. The region's wines are highly sought after and command premium prices on the global market.
