Family: | 'Saksenaeaceae' |
Saksenaeaceae is a family of fungi within the order Mucorales, which is part of the division Zygomycota. This family is notable for its pathogenic species that can cause infections in humans and animals. The most well-known genus within this family is Saksenaea.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The family Saksenaeaceae was established to accommodate certain fungi that exhibit unique morphological and genetic characteristics distinct from other families within the Mucorales. The type genus, Saksenaea, was first described by G.C. Saksena in 1953.
Morphology[edit | edit source]
Members of the Saksenaeaceae family are characterized by their filamentous growth form, producing hyphae that are typically non-septate. The sporangia are often globose to pyriform, and the sporangiospores are produced internally. These fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually, with zygospores being the sexual reproductive structures.
Pathogenicity[edit | edit source]
Species within the Saksenaeaceae family, particularly Saksenaea vasiformis, are known to be opportunistic pathogens. They can cause a rare but serious infection known as mucormycosis, which primarily affects immunocompromised individuals. The infection can manifest in various forms, including cutaneous, rhinocerebral, and disseminated mucormycosis.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Saksenaeaceae fungi are typically found in soil and decaying organic matter. They are saprophytic in nature, playing a role in the decomposition of organic materials. However, under certain conditions, they can become pathogenic.
Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of infections caused by Saksenaeaceae involves microbiological culture and histopathological examination. Treatment typically includes antifungal therapy with agents such as amphotericin B, along with surgical debridement of infected tissues.
Research and Importance[edit | edit source]
Research on Saksenaeaceae is ongoing to better understand their pathogenic mechanisms and to develop more effective treatments for infections. These fungi are also of interest in studies of fungal evolution and ecology.
