Salem is a city in McCook County, in the state of South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Salem was 1,347. Salem serves as the county seat of McCook County.

Salem was founded in 1880. The city was named after Salem, Massachusetts, the hometown of an early settler. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad played a significant role in the development of Salem, as it was a major transportation route for the area.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Salem is located at coordinates 43°43′N 97°23′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km²), all of it land. The city is situated in the eastern part of South Dakota, approximately 35 miles west of Sioux Falls.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 1,347 people, 590 households, and 367 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,320.6 inhabitants per square mile (509.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Salem is primarily based on agriculture, with many residents engaged in farming and related activities. The city also has a number of small businesses and services that cater to the local community.
Education[edit | edit source]
Salem is served by the McCook Central School District, which provides education from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district includes McCook Central Elementary School and McCook Central High School.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Salem is accessible via U.S. Route 81 and South Dakota Highway 38. The city is also served by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
Notable People[edit | edit source]
- George McGovern, a prominent politician and former U.S. Senator, was born in nearby Avon but spent part of his early life in Salem.
