Sally Cecilia Hawkins (born 27 April 1976) is an English actress known for her work in film, television, and theatre. She has received numerous accolades for her performances, including a Golden Globe Award and nominations for two Academy Awards.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Sally Hawkins was born in Dulwich, London, England. She is the daughter of Jacqui and Colin Hawkins, authors and illustrators of children's books. Hawkins attended James Allen's Girls' School in Dulwich and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1998.

Theatre[edit | edit source]

Hawkins began her career in theatre, performing in various productions with the Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre. Her notable stage roles include appearances in "Much Ado About Nothing" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Film[edit | edit source]

Hawkins made her film debut in "All or Nothing" (2002), directed by Mike Leigh. She gained wider recognition for her role in "Happy-Go-Lucky" (2008), also directed by Leigh, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

She received critical acclaim for her performances in "Blue Jasmine" (2013), directed by Woody Allen, and "The Shape of Water" (2017), directed by Guillermo del Toro. For "The Shape of Water," Hawkins received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination.

Hawkins has appeared in several television series, including "Fingersmith" (2005) and "Persuasion" (2007). Her television work has been praised for its depth and versatility.
