Salta
Salta is a city located in the Lerma Valley, at the foothills of the Andes mountains in Argentina. It is also the name for the capital city of the Salta Province. With a population of over 600,000 inhabitants, Salta is the second most populated city in the northwest of the country.

Salta was founded on April 16, 1582, by the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Lerma, who intended the settlement to be an outpost between Lima, Peru and Buenos Aires. The city has been an important part of the Spanish colonial rule, and its architecture and culture still bear the marks of that period.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Salta is situated in the Lerma Valley, 1,152 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Andes mountains. The weather is warm and dry, with annual temperatures averaging around 20°C. The city is surrounded by hills and mountains, three of which are visible from the city center.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Salta is diversified, but the most significant sectors are mining, agriculture, and tourism. The region is known for its production of tobacco, grains, and vineyards. The city is also a significant tourist destination, with visitors attracted to its colonial architecture, the stunning natural scenery of the Andes, and the numerous vineyards in the area.

Salta is known for its vibrant culture, which is a blend of indigenous and Spanish influences. The city is famous for its folk music, known as Folklore, and its traditional dances, such as the Zamba. The city is also home to several museums, including the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology, which houses artifacts from the Inca civilization.

The cuisine of Salta is a blend of indigenous and Spanish influences. Some of the traditional dishes include empanadas salteñas, tamales, and locro. The region is also known for its wine, particularly the Torrontés variety, which is grown in the nearby Cafayate region.
