Sam Fuld
Samuel Babson Fuld (born November 20, 1981) is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder and the current general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Known for his defensive prowess and hustle, Fuld played for the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, and Minnesota Twins during his MLB career.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Fuld was born in Durham, New Hampshire. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. After high school, Fuld attended Stanford University, where he played college baseball for the Stanford Cardinal.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
Chicago Cubs[edit | edit source]
Fuld was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his MLB debut with the Cubs on September 5, 2007. Fuld was known for his defensive skills and often used as a late-inning defensive replacement.
Tampa Bay Rays[edit | edit source]
In 2011, Fuld was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a multi-player deal. He quickly became a fan favorite due to his spectacular defensive plays and hustle, earning the nickname "Superman" for his diving catches.
Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins[edit | edit source]
Fuld signed with the Oakland Athletics in 2014 but was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins later that year. He returned to the Athletics in a trade during the same season and played with them until the end of his MLB career in 2015.
Post-Playing Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring as a player, Fuld joined the Philadelphia Phillies as a player information coordinator in 2017. In December 2020, he was named the general manager of the Phillies, where he works alongside president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Fuld has been open about his diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, which he has managed throughout his career. He is an advocate for diabetes awareness and has participated in various related initiatives.
