Sarah Storey
Dame Sarah Joanne Storey (née Bailey; born 26 October 1977) is a British road and track racing cyclist and former swimmer. She is a multiple Paralympic gold medalist in both sports, and has competed in the Paralympic Games since 1992. Storey is one of the most successful British Paralympians of all time.
Early Life and Swimming Career[edit | edit source]
Sarah Storey was born in Eccles, Greater Manchester. She was born without a functioning left hand due to a congenital disorder. Storey began her career as a swimmer, making her international debut at the age of 14 at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. She won two gold medals, three silver medals, and a bronze medal at these games.
Storey continued to compete in swimming at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, and the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens. Over her swimming career, she accumulated a total of five gold, eight silver, and three bronze medals.
Cycling Career[edit | edit source]
In 2005, Storey transitioned from swimming to cycling. She quickly found success in her new sport, winning multiple national titles. Storey made her Paralympic cycling debut at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, where she won two gold medals in the individual pursuit and the road time trial.
Storey continued her dominance in cycling at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, winning four gold medals. She also competed in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she won three gold medals.

Storey has set multiple world records in both swimming and cycling. She has also competed in non-Paralympic events, including the Commonwealth Games and the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships.
In addition to her Paralympic success, Storey has won numerous national and international titles in cycling. She has been awarded several honors, including being appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2013 for her services to para-cycling.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Sarah Storey is married to Barney Storey, a fellow cyclist and tandem pilot. The couple has a daughter. Storey is an advocate for disability sports and has been involved in various initiatives to promote para-sports.
