Sarsasapogenin 3β-glucosyltransferase

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sarsasapogenin 3β-glucosyltransferase is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction of transferring a glucosyl group to sarsasapogenin. This enzyme belongs to the family of glycosyltransferase, specifically the hexosyltransferases. The systematic name of this enzyme class is UDP-glucose:sarsasapogenin 3-beta-D-glucosyltransferase. Other names in common use include UGT73P2, and UGTP2.

Function[edit | edit source]

Sarsasapogenin 3β-glucosyltransferase is involved in the biosynthesis of saponins, a class of chemical compounds found in particular abundance in various plant species. More specifically, this enzyme catalyzes the transfer of a glucosyl group from UDP-glucose to the 3β-hydroxyl group of sarsasapogenin, a sapogenin derived from the hydrolysis of saponins.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Like other glycosyltransferases, sarsasapogenin 3β-glucosyltransferase has a typical GT-B fold structure with two Rossmann-like domains. The enzyme is also characterized by a conserved DXD motif, which is crucial for its catalytic activity.

Biological Role[edit | edit source]

Saponins, the products of the reaction catalyzed by sarsasapogenin 3β-glucosyltransferase, have various biological roles. They are known for their ability to lyse red blood cells, and they have been found to have potential therapeutic applications, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering effects.
