Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE)

The Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) is a type of reference electrode commonly used in electrochemical measurements. It is a crucial component in the field of electrochemistry, providing a stable reference potential against which other electrodes' potentials can be measured. The SCE consists of mercury (Hg) in contact with mercury(I) chloride (Hg2Cl2), known as calomel, and a saturated solution of potassium chloride (KCl). This setup ensures a stable and well-defined electrode potential.

The SCE comprises a glass tube containing a mercury electrode covered with a layer of calomel (Hg2Cl2). The tube also contains a saturated solution of potassium chloride (KCl), which serves as the electrolyte. A porous plug or frit at the bottom of the electrode allows for ionic contact with the solution being tested while minimizing mixing of the two solutions.
