Saxagliptin/metformin
Saxagliptin/metformin is a combination drug used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It contains two active ingredients: saxagliptin and metformin. The drug is marketed under the brand name Kombiglyze XR by AstraZeneca.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Saxagliptin/metformin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both saxagliptin and metformin is appropriate.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Saxagliptin works by increasing the levels of certain natural substances that lower blood sugar when it is high. Metformin works by decreasing glucose (sugar) production in the liver and absorption in the intestine, and by improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of saxagliptin/metformin include upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, and headache. Serious side effects may include lactic acidosis, pancreatitis, and heart failure.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
Saxagliptin/metformin is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Saxagliptin/metformin may interact with other drugs such as digoxin, rifampin, and topiramate.
Dosage[edit | edit source]
The dosage of saxagliptin/metformin is based on the patient's medical condition, kidney function, and response to treatment.
