Schramsberg Vineyards is a renowned winery located in the Napa Valley region of California, United States. Established in 1862, it is one of the oldest wineries in the area and is particularly famous for its sparkling wines produced using the traditional méthode champenoise.

History[edit | edit source]

Jacob Schram, founder of Schramsberg Vineyards

The winery was founded by Jacob Schram, a German immigrant who recognized the potential of the Napa Valley for producing high-quality wines. Schram purchased a 200-acre property on the slopes of Diamond Mountain and began planting vineyards. By 1875, Schramsberg was producing over 12,000 cases of wine annually.

In the early 20th century, the winery changed hands several times and fell into disrepair during Prohibition. It was revitalized in 1965 when Jack and Jamie Davies purchased the property and focused on producing sparkling wines. Their efforts were instrumental in establishing Schramsberg as a leader in American sparkling wine production.

The winemaking process at Schramsberg follows the traditional méthode champenoise, which involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle. This method is crucial for developing the complex flavors and fine bubbles that characterize Schramsberg's sparkling wines.

Notable Wines[edit | edit source]

Schramsberg is best known for its range of sparkling wines, including the Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, and the prestigious J. Schram. These wines have been served at official state functions and are highly regarded for their quality and elegance.
