The winery was founded by Jacob Schram, a German immigrant who recognized the potential of the Napa Valley for producing high-quality wines. Schram purchased a 200-acre property on the slopes of Diamond Mountain and began planting vineyards. By 1875, Schramsberg was producing over 12,000 cases of wine annually.

In the early 20th century, the winery changed hands several times and fell into disrepair during Prohibition. It was revitalized in 1965 when Jack and Jamie Davies purchased the property and focused on producing sparkling wines. Their efforts were instrumental in establishing Schramsberg as a leader in American sparkling wine production.
