Seanan McGuire (born January 5, 1978) is an American author and filk singer. She is best known for her urban fantasy novels, particularly the October Daye series and the InCryptid series. McGuire also writes under the pseudonym Mira Grant.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Seanan McGuire was born in Martinez, California. She developed an early interest in science fiction and fantasy literature, which influenced her writing career. McGuire attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied literature and folklore.

Writing Career[edit | edit source]

McGuire's first published novel, Rosemary and Rue, was released in 2009 and is the first book in the October Daye series. The series follows the adventures of October "Toby" Daye, a half-fae, half-human private investigator. The series has been well-received and has garnered a dedicated fanbase.

In addition to the October Daye series, McGuire writes the InCryptid series, which began with Discount Armageddon in 2012. The series focuses on the Price family, who study and protect cryptids, creatures whose existence is unconfirmed by science.

Under the pseudonym Mira Grant, McGuire writes science fiction horror. Her Newsflesh series, starting with Feed in 2010, explores a post-zombie apocalypse world where bloggers are the primary source of news.

McGuire is also an accomplished filk singer and songwriter. She has released several albums of original music, often inspired by her favorite books and television shows. Her work in the filk community has earned her several Pegasus Awards.

Seanan McGuire has received numerous awards for her writing, including the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Locus Award. She was the first person to appear on the final ballot for four Hugo Awards in a single year.
