Sebox homeobox

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sebox homeobox is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SEBOX gene. The SEBOX gene is a member of the homeobox family of genes that play crucial roles in gene regulation, cell differentiation, and development.

Function[edit | edit source]

The SEBOX gene encodes a protein that is a member of the homeobox family. Homeobox genes are characterized by a 60-amino acid homeodomain that binds DNA and can regulate the expression of other genes. The encoded protein functions as a transcription factor and may play a role in neurogenesis and endocrine development.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the SEBOX gene have been associated with various genetic disorders. For instance, it has been linked to congenital hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by low levels of thyroid hormones at birth, which can lead to growth and developmental problems if not treated.
