Second hand smoke

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Second-hand smoke (SHS), also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a mixture of two forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco: sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. Sidestream smoke is smoke that comes directly from a lighted cigarette, pipe, or cigar, while mainstream smoke is the smoke exhaled by a smoker. People exposed to second-hand smoke are at an increased risk for numerous health problems, similar to those faced by smokers themselves, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory infections. Second-hand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.

Health Effects[edit | edit source]

The health effects of second-hand smoke are well-documented. Non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke at home or work increase their heart disease risk by 25-30% and their lung cancer risk by 20-30%. Second-hand smoke exposure is particularly harmful to children, causing an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, middle ear disease, more severe asthma, respiratory symptoms, and slowed lung growth.

Regulation and Prevention[edit | edit source]

Many countries have taken steps to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke. Laws and regulations banning smoking in public places, such as bars, restaurants, and workplaces, have been implemented in numerous jurisdictions worldwide. These measures have been shown to reduce the levels of second-hand smoke exposure and related health risks.

Public Awareness[edit | edit source]

Public awareness campaigns have also played a crucial role in educating the public about the dangers of second-hand smoke and encouraging smoke-free environments. Efforts to increase awareness about the health risks associated with second-hand smoke exposure are ongoing, with many health organizations and governments leading the charge.
