Segment is a term used in various fields of study, including mathematics, computer science, and biology. In each of these fields, the term has a unique definition and application.
Mathematics[edit | edit source]
In mathematics, a segment refers to a part of a line that is bounded by two distinct end points, and contains every point on the line between its end points. Depending on the context, segments may be either open (excluding the end points) or closed (including the end points).
Computer Science[edit | edit source]
In computer science, a segment is a portion of a program that can be loaded into memory and executed by the processor. Segments are used in memory management and protection in modern operating systems.
Biology[edit | edit source]
In biology, a segment is a repetitive unit of an organism's body. Many animals, such as worms and arthropods, have segmented bodies.
