Semen collection

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Semen collection refers to the process of obtaining semen from male humans or other animals with the use of various methods, for the purposes of artificial insemination, or medical study (usually in fertility clinics). Semen can be collected via masturbation, prostatic massage, artificial vagina, or electroejaculation.

Methods[edit | edit source]

Masturbation[edit | edit source]

Masturbation is the most common method of semen collection in humans. The person is usually given a private room to masturbate and ejaculate into a sterile container.

Prostatic massage[edit | edit source]

Prostatic massage is another method used to collect semen, especially in cases where the individual is unable to ejaculate normally. This method involves massaging the prostate gland to produce a fluid that contains semen.

Artificial vagina[edit | edit source]

An artificial vagina is often used to collect semen from animals for artificial insemination. This method is commonly used in the breeding of livestock.

Electroejaculation[edit | edit source]

Electroejaculation is a procedure used to obtain semen when normal masturbation is not possible. This is often used in veterinary medicine and some reproductive technology procedures.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Semen collected can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used immediately for artificial insemination or it can be frozen and stored for future use. It can also be used for medical research, such as in fertility studies.
