Sensory Integrative Therapy is a form of occupational therapy designed to help individuals, particularly children, who have difficulty processing sensory information. This therapeutic approach aims to assist those with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or sensory integration challenges to better interpret and respond to sensory stimuli from their environment, thereby improving their functional abilities in daily activities.

Sensory Integrative Therapy was developed by A. Jean Ayres, an occupational therapist and educational psychologist, in the 1960s. Ayres conceptualized sensory integration as a neurological process that organizes sensation from one's own body and the environment, thus making it possible to use the body effectively within the environment. According to Ayres, sensory integration is foundational for higher-level learning and behavior.

This therapy is based on the premise that sensory integration is a developmental process, and disruptions in this process can lead to difficulties in learning, development, and behavior. Children with SPD may exhibit a wide range of symptoms, including hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to sensory inputs, poor motor skills, behavioral problems, anxiety, and difficulty in academic and social situations.

Sensory Integrative Therapy involves various activities that provide vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile stimuli to the child in a structured, repetitive manner. The therapist tailors activities to meet the individual needs of each child, focusing on sensory experiences that the child finds challenging. The goal is to help the child improve their ability to process and respond to sensory information, which in turn can enhance motor skills, behavior, and learning abilities.
