Sergei Stanislavovich Udaltsov (born February 16, 1977) is a Russian political activist and the leader of the Left Front (Russia), a coalition of left-wing political organizations in Russia. He is known for his opposition to the government of Vladimir Putin and has been involved in numerous protests and demonstrations.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Sergei Udaltsov was born in Moscow, in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he studied international relations.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Udaltsov became involved in politics in the late 1990s. He initially joined the Communist Party of the Russian Federation but later left to form the Left Front (Russia), a coalition of various left-wing groups. The Left Front has been active in organizing protests and demonstrations against the Russian government, particularly focusing on issues such as corruption, human rights, and social justice.
Activism and Arrests[edit | edit source]
Udaltsov has been arrested multiple times for his involvement in protests and demonstrations. He gained significant attention during the 2011–2013 Russian protests, which were sparked by allegations of electoral fraud in the 2011 Russian legislative election. Udaltsov was a prominent figure in these protests and was frequently detained by the police.
In 2012, Udaltsov was charged with organizing mass riots and was placed under house arrest. In 2014, he was sentenced to four and a half years in a penal colony. He was released in 2017.

Sergei Udaltsov is married to Anastasia Udaltsova, who is also a political activist. They have two children.
