Seroconversion
Seroconversion is the process by which a person's immune system responds to an infection by producing antibodies. This process is a key aspect of the body's adaptive immune response, and it is typically accompanied by the appearance of specific antigens in the blood. Seroconversion is a critical stage in many infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

Seroconversion begins when a pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria, enters the body. The immune system responds by producing specific antibodies that can recognize and neutralize the pathogen. These antibodies are produced by B cells, a type of white blood cell. The process of seroconversion can take several weeks to complete, and during this time, the person may not show any symptoms of the infection.
Detection[edit | edit source]
Seroconversion can be detected through a variety of laboratory tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot. These tests look for the presence of specific antibodies in the blood. A positive result indicates that the person has been infected with the pathogen and has produced an immune response.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Seroconversion is a critical stage in many infectious diseases. For example, in HIV infection, seroconversion typically occurs within a few weeks of exposure to the virus. During this time, the person may experience a flu-like illness known as seroconversion illness. After seroconversion, the person will test positive for HIV antibodies.
In hepatitis B and C infections, seroconversion is also a key stage. It indicates that the person's immune system has recognized the virus and is producing antibodies against it. However, in some cases, the immune response may not be strong enough to clear the infection, leading to chronic disease.
