Sethuraman Panchanathan
American computer scientist and academic administrator
Sethuraman Panchanathan is an Indian-American computer scientist and academic administrator who currently serves as the 15th Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). He is known for his contributions to the fields of computer science and engineering, particularly in the areas of human-centered computing and assistive technologies.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Sethuraman Panchanathan was born in Chennai, India. He completed his undergraduate education in electronics and communication engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He then pursued a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Panchanathan moved to Canada to further his studies, earning a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Ottawa.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Panchanathan began his academic career as a faculty member at the University of Ottawa, where he focused on research in the areas of computer vision and multimedia computing. In 1997, he joined Arizona State University (ASU) as a professor in the School of Computing and Informatics. At ASU, he founded the Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC), which is dedicated to developing technologies that assist individuals with disabilities.

Panchanathan's research has significantly impacted the development of assistive technologies. His work at CUbiC has led to the creation of devices that enhance the quality of life for people with visual impairments and other disabilities.
