Sexuality and Mormonism
Sexuality and Mormonism refers to the teachings and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and its members, colloquially known as Mormons, regarding sexual behavior and orientation. The LDS Church teaches that sexuality is a divine gift, but it also maintains specific guidelines and standards regarding its expression.
Sexual Behavior[edit | edit source]
The LDS Church teaches that sexual relations are reserved for a man and woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife. This principle, known as the Law of Chastity, is considered a fundamental part of LDS doctrine. Violations of the Law of Chastity may result in church discipline, including the possibility of excommunication.
Homosexuality[edit | edit source]
The LDS Church's stance on homosexuality has evolved over time. While it currently teaches that same-sex attraction is not a sin, it maintains that engaging in homosexual behavior is a violation of the Law of Chastity. The church has been involved in political and social debates related to homosexuality, including the support of California Proposition 8.
Transgender Issues[edit | edit source]
The LDS Church does not officially recognize transgender individuals and does not perform sex reassignment surgeries in its hospitals. However, it does not excommunicate members for undergoing such surgeries.
Sex Education[edit | edit source]
The LDS Church encourages parents to teach their children about sex in the context of marriage. It provides resources for parents to use in these discussions, including the pamphlet "A Parent's Guide".
Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]
The LDS Church's teachings on sexuality have been the subject of criticism and controversy. Critics argue that the church's stance on issues such as homosexuality and transgender rights is outdated and harmful.
