Shaman

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Shamanism is a religious practice that involves a practitioner, a shaman, who is believed to interact with a spirit world through altered states of consciousness, such as trance. The goal of this is usually to direct these spirits or spiritual energies into the physical world, for healing or some other purpose.

Origins and history[edit | edit source]

Shamanism is believed to be an ancient practice, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was practiced during the Paleolithic period. It is found in many indigenous cultures around the world, from the Siberian and Native American cultures to the Aboriginal Australians and Inuit people.

Beliefs and practices[edit | edit source]

Shamans believe in a world that is unseen but that has direct influence on the physical world. They enter into trance states during a ritual, and practice divination and healing. The shaman may have, or acquire many spirit guides, who often guide and direct the shaman in their travels in the spirit world.

Criticism and controversy[edit | edit source]

Shamanism has been criticized for its focus on the individual, rather than the community. It has also been criticized for its potential to exploit indigenous cultures.
