Shannon Zenk
Shannon Zenk is an American nurse scientist and public health researcher. She is the Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Zenk's research primarily focuses on social determinants of health, health disparities, and the impact of neighborhood environments on health behaviors and outcomes.

Shannon Zenk was born in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She then went on to complete her Master of Public Health (MPH) and PhD in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan.
Career[edit | edit source]
Zenk began her career as a registered nurse, working in various clinical settings. She later transitioned to academia and research, joining the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing. Her work has been instrumental in understanding how neighborhood environments, such as access to healthy foods and green spaces, influence health behaviors and outcomes.
In 2020, Zenk was appointed as the Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research. In this role, she oversees the institute's efforts to advance nursing science and improve public health through research.
