Shark River Reef
Shark River Reef is a marine ecosystem located off the coast of New Jersey, United States. It is one of the 15 artificial reefs established by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife. The reef system is part of a comprehensive artificial reef program aimed at enhancing fisheries resources and providing recreational opportunities for the state's anglers and divers.
Location and Size[edit | edit source]
Shark River Reef is situated approximately 15.6 nautical miles southeast of Manasquan Inlet, and 16.5 nautical miles east of Shark River Inlet. The reef site encompasses an area of 4.4 square nautical miles.
Composition[edit | edit source]
The reef is composed of a variety of materials, including shipwrecks, railroad cars, and concrete and steel structures, which provide habitat for a diverse array of marine life. The materials are strategically placed to create a complex habitat that mimics a natural reef.
Marine Life[edit | edit source]
Shark River Reef is home to a wide variety of marine species, including black sea bass, tautog, summer flounder, and lobster. The reef also attracts larger predatory species such as bluefish and sharks.
Recreational Opportunities[edit | edit source]
The reef provides excellent opportunities for recreational fishing and scuba diving. Anglers can catch a variety of game fish, while divers can explore the numerous wrecks and structures that make up the reef.
