Shelby Township is a charter township located in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. With a population of 73,804 as of the 2010 census, Shelby Township is one of the fastest-growing communities in Metro Detroit.

History[edit | edit source]

Shelby Township was first settled in 1821 and was officially organized in 1827. It was named after Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky. The township experienced significant growth in the late 20th century and was incorporated as a charter township in 1984.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Shelby Township is located in southeastern Michigan, approximately 25 miles north of downtown Detroit. It covers a total area of 35.4 square miles, all of which is land. The township is bordered by the cities of Rochester Hills and Rochester to the east, Sterling Heights to the south, Washington Township to the west, and Macomb Township to the north.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 census, Shelby Township had a population of 73,804. The racial makeup of the township was 89.4% White, 4.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

Shelby Township operates under a Supervisor-Board form of government. The township supervisor, currently Rick Stathakis, serves as the chief administrative officer. The township board consists of seven members elected by the residents.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Shelby Township has a diverse economy with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. The township is home to several major employers, including automotive manufacturers, healthcare facilities, and retail centers. The Lakeside Mall, located in Shelby Township, is one of the largest shopping malls in the Metro Detroit area.

The township is served by several school districts, including Utica Community Schools and Romeo Community Schools. There are also several private schools in the area. Higher education institutions, such as Macomb Community College and Oakland University, are located nearby.

Shelby Township offers a variety of parks and recreational facilities for residents and visitors. Some of the notable parks include River Bends Park, Stony Creek Metropark, and Heritage Gardens. These parks provide opportunities for hiking, biking, picnicking, and other outdoor activities.
