Sheue-yann Cheng is a renowned biomedical scientist specializing in the field of molecular biology and endocrinology. She is best known for her significant contributions to the understanding of thyroid hormone action and its implications in human health and disease.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Cheng was born and raised in Taiwan. She moved to the United States for her higher education. She completed her undergraduate studies in biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and later pursued her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco.

Career[edit | edit source]

Following her Ph.D., Cheng joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a postdoctoral fellow. She later became a senior investigator at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), where she currently leads the Section on Molecular Thyroidology.

Research[edit | edit source]

Cheng's research primarily focuses on the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action. She has made significant contributions to the understanding of the structure and function of thyroid hormone receptors (TRs), and their roles in development, metabolism, and disease. Her work has led to the discovery of several novel TR isoforms and their unique functions.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Cheng's outstanding contributions to the field of endocrinology have earned her numerous awards and honors. She is a recipient of the American Thyroid Association's Distinguished Scientist Award and the Endocrine Society's Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award.
