Shui Hsien tea

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Shui Hsien tea (also known as Water Sprite or Narcissus) is a type of Oolong tea originating from the Wuyi Mountains in the Fujian province of China. It is one of the most famous and oldest types of Oolong tea, and is known for its strong, lasting aroma and rich, full-bodied flavor.

History[edit | edit source]

Shui Hsien tea has a long history dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), where it was highly prized for its unique flavor and aroma. The tea was traditionally grown in the mineral-rich soils of the Wuyi Mountains, which contributed to its distinctive taste.

Production[edit | edit source]

The production of Shui Hsien tea involves a complex process that includes withering, rolling, oxidation, and roasting. The leaves are typically harvested in the spring and fall, and are then withered under the sun to reduce moisture. After withering, the leaves are rolled to break the cell walls and release the tea's natural oils. The leaves are then partially oxidized, which gives the tea its unique flavor and aroma. Finally, the leaves are roasted to stop the oxidation process and enhance the tea's flavor.

Flavor and Aroma[edit | edit source]

Shui Hsien tea is known for its strong, lasting aroma and rich, full-bodied flavor. The tea has a sweet, floral taste with notes of honey and orchid, and a lingering aftertaste. The aroma is often described as being reminiscent of narcissus flowers, which is why the tea is also known as Narcissus tea.

Health Benefits[edit | edit source]

Like other types of Oolong tea, Shui Hsien tea is rich in antioxidants and has several potential health benefits. These include improving heart health, aiding in weight loss, improving digestion, and reducing the risk of certain types of cancer.
