Fujian

Fujian is a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Fujian is bordered by Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west, Guangdong to the south, and the Taiwan Strait to the east. Its capital is Fuzhou, while other major cities include Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Nanping, Longyan, Sanming, and Ningde. Fujian is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse provinces in China.

Fujian, formerly romanised as Fukien or Foukien, is a province with a rich history. The name Fujian came from the combination of Fuzhou and Jianzhou, two cities in Fujian, during the Tang dynasty. Fujian was part of the ancient kingdom of Minyue, before it was absorbed into China during the Han dynasty.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Fujian is located in the southeastern part of China, facing the Taiwan Strait. The province is mostly mountainous and is traditionally described to be "Eight parts mountain, one part water, and one part farmland". Fujian has a subtropical climate, with warm winters and hot summers.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Fujian's economy is based on electronics, petrochemicals, automobile manufacturing, paper production, bioengineering and other high-tech industries. It is one of the wealthier provinces in China, with a high GDP per capita.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Fujian has a diverse culture, with its own distinct dialects, customs, and traditions. The province is known for its traditional puppet shows, opera, and martial arts.
