Small nucleolar RNA SNORD98

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Small nucleolar RNA SNORD98 (SNORD98) is a member of the small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) family, which plays a critical role in the modification and processing of ribosomal RNA (rRNA). SNORD98, like other snoRNAs, is involved in the chemical modification of rRNA, specifically in the methylation of ribose sugars within the rRNA molecule. This modification is essential for the proper assembly and function of the ribosome, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis.

Function[edit | edit source]

SNORD98 is classified as a C/D box snoRNA, which means it contains conserved sequence motifs known as the C box and the D box. These motifs are critical for the snoRNA's function in guiding the 2'-O-methylation of specific rRNA residues. The precise target of SNORD98 within the rRNA is not fully understood, but like other C/D box snoRNAs, it is believed to recognize its target site through base pairing between the snoRNA and the rRNA, with the assistance of snoRNP proteins, including fibrillarin, which carries out the methylation reaction.

Biogenesis[edit | edit source]

SNORD98 is encoded within the introns of host genes and is released through the process of splicing. After its release, SNORD98 is assembled into a snoRNP complex, which includes essential proteins such as fibrillarin, NOP56, NOP58, and 15.5kD protein. This complex is then transported to the nucleolus, the site of rRNA synthesis and processing, where it performs its function.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

While the specific functions of many snoRNAs, including SNORD98, are still being elucidated, alterations in snoRNA expression and function have been linked to various diseases, including cancer and Prader-Willi syndrome. The role of SNORD98 in these conditions, however, remains an area of active research. Understanding the function and regulation of snoRNAs like SNORD98 may provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases and potentially lead to novel therapeutic strategies.
