Snellen Test

The Snellen Test is a commonly used eye examination method designed to measure visual acuity. It was developed by the Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen in 1862 and has since become a standard tool in ophthalmology and optometry.

History[edit | edit source]

The Snellen Test was created by Herman Snellen, a Dutch ophthalmologist, in the 19th century. Snellen was a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology and his test has been widely adopted around the world due to its simplicity and effectiveness.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The Snellen Test involves a patient reading from a Snellen chart, which is a chart with several lines of letters. The letters on the top line are the largest, with each subsequent line's letters being progressively smaller. The patient stands at a distance of 20 feet from the chart and reads the letters out loud, starting from the top. The smallest line that can be read accurately indicates the patient's visual acuity.

Visual Acuity[edit | edit source]

Visual acuity is a measure of the eye's ability to distinguish object details and shape, considered essential for tasks such as reading and driving. In the Snellen Test, visual acuity is expressed as a fraction, with the standard or normal vision being 20/20. If a patient has 20/40 vision, it means that they must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 40 feet.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

While the Snellen Test is a valuable tool in assessing visual acuity, it has its limitations. It does not measure other aspects of vision such as peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception, or the ability to perceive contrast. Furthermore, it relies on the patient's ability to understand and cooperate with the test, which may not always be possible, especially with young children or individuals with certain disabilities.
