Sobeys Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Company Limited, headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. It is one of the largest food retailers in Canada, with over 1,500 stores operating in all ten provinces under various banners.

Sobeys was founded in Stellarton, Nova Scotia by John W. Sobey in 1907 as a meat delivery business. In 1924, his son Frank convinced him to expand into a full grocery business, serving the industrial Pictou County region.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Sobeys operates various regional chains, including Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, and Lawtons Drugs. The company also operates in retail-related property management through Crombie REIT.

Corporate Affairs[edit | edit source]

Sobeys is committed to helping Canadians eat better and has launched several initiatives to this end. These include the removal of artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners from its private label products.
