Social science is a major category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. It in turn has many branches, each of which is considered a "social science". The main social sciences include economics, political science, human geography, demography, psychology, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, history, and law.

Social science as a whole has many branches. These social sciences include, but are not limited to: anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, and social work.

Branches of Social Science[edit | edit source]

Anthropology[edit | edit source]

Anthropology is the holistic "science of humans", a science of the totality of human existence.

Archaeology[edit | edit source]

Archaeology, which studies past human cultures through investigation of physical evidence, is thought of as a branch of anthropology in the United States.

Economics[edit | edit source]

Economics is a social science that seeks to analyze and describe the production, distribution, and consumption of wealth.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Geography is the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries.

History[edit | edit source]

History is the continuous, systematic narrative and research into past human events as interpreted through historiographical paradigms or theories.

Law[edit | edit source]

Law in common parlance, is a rule that is enforced through institutions of government.

Linguistics[edit | edit source]

Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure.

Political Science[edit | edit source]

Political science is the study of political behavior and examines the acquisition and application of power.

Psychology[edit | edit source]

Psychology is the science of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought.

Sociology[edit | edit source]

Sociology is the study of society and human social action.

Social Work[edit | edit source]

Social work is a professional and academic discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of an individual, group, or community by intervening through research, policy, community organizing, direct practice, and teaching on behalf of those afflicted with poverty or any real or perceived social injustices and violations of their human rights.
