Social sciences

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Social sciences are a group of academic disciplines dedicated to examining society. This branch of science focuses on the relationships among individuals within those societies. The term was formerly used to refer to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century. In addition to sociology, it now encompasses a wide array of academic disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, economics, human geography, linguistics, management science, political science, psychology, and history.

Definition[edit | edit source]

The term social science is often used to refer specifically to the field of sociology, the specific study of human society, which was established in the 19th century. However, in a more comprehensive sense, social science includes a broader range of scholarly fields that involve the systematic study of human behavior and society, including anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, and psychology.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of the social sciences begins in the Age of Enlightenment after 1650, which saw a revolution within natural philosophy, changing the basic framework by which individuals understood what was "scientific". Social sciences came forth from the moral philosophy of the time and were influenced by the Age of Revolutions, such as the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution.

Disciplines[edit | edit source]

The social sciences are a broad group of academic disciplines. Though they often include the field of sociology, they also include a wide array of other disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, economics, human geography, linguistics, management science, political science, psychology, and history.
