Solopaca DOC
Solopaca DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation for red, white, and rosé wines from the Solopaca area in the Campania region of Italy. The designation was granted in 1977, and it is one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the region.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of viticulture in Solopaca dates back to the Roman Empire, when the area was known for its high-quality wines. The modern Solopaca DOC was established in 1977, following the Italian wine law of 1963 that created the DOC system to protect the quality and authenticity of Italian wines.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
Solopaca is located in the province of Benevento, in the Campania region of southern Italy. The area is characterized by its hilly terrain and volcanic soil, which contribute to the unique characteristics of Solopaca wines. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]
Solopaca DOC wines can be made from a variety of grapes. The red and rosé wines are primarily made from Aglianico, Sangiovese, and Piedirosso grapes, while the white wines are made from Falanghina, Coda di Volpe, and Greco grapes.
Wine Styles[edit | edit source]
Solopaca DOC produces a range of wine styles. The red wines are known for their deep color, full body, and flavors of dark fruit and spice. The white wines are typically light to medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and flavors of citrus and green apple. The rosé wines are dry and crisp, with flavors of red berries and a hint of spice.
Production[edit | edit source]
To qualify for the Solopaca DOC designation, wines must meet certain production standards. These include specific grape varieties, minimum aging periods, and alcohol content. The wines must also pass a taste test conducted by a panel of experts.
