Son-Rise
Son-Rise is a home-based program developed by the parents of a child diagnosed with autism. The program is based on the principle of joining the child in their own world before guiding them into social interaction and communication.
History[edit | edit source]
The Son-Rise Program was developed by Barry Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman in the 1970s for their son, Raun Kaufman, who was diagnosed with severe autism. The Kaufmans' approach was based on the belief that their son's autism was not a permanent condition, but rather a state of mind that could be changed. They developed a program that focused on joining their son in his unique behaviors and interests, rather than trying to force him to conform to societal norms.
Methodology[edit | edit source]
The Son-Rise Program is based on three key principles: joining, motivation, and social development. The program encourages parents to join their child in their unique behaviors and interests, rather than trying to force them to conform to societal norms. This approach is believed to build trust and rapport, which can then be used as a foundation for teaching social and communication skills.
Effectiveness[edit | edit source]
The effectiveness of the Son-Rise Program has been the subject of debate. Some studies have reported positive outcomes, while others have found no significant difference between the Son-Rise Program and other interventions. The program has been criticized for its lack of empirical evidence and for its reliance on anecdotal reports.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
Critics of the Son-Rise Program argue that it is not based on empirical evidence and that it relies too heavily on anecdotal reports. They also argue that the program's focus on joining the child in their unique behaviors and interests can lead to the child becoming more isolated and less able to function in society.
