To the north, it shares an international border with the U.S. state of Arizona, and to the west it has a significant coastline on the Gulf of California.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Sonora is the second largest state in Mexico, covering an area of 179,355 square kilometers. The state is characterized by a diverse range of landscapes, including mountain ranges, desert plains, and coastal areas. The Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range runs through the eastern part of the state, while the Sonoran Desert covers much of the northern and central regions. The state's western coastline along the Gulf of California is known for its beautiful beaches and rich marine biodiversity.

History[edit | edit source]

The area now known as Sonora was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The Yaqui, Mayo, and Seri are among the indigenous groups that have a long history in the region. During the Spanish colonial period, Sonora was part of the province of Nueva Vizcaya. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Sonora became a state in 1830.

Sonora's economy is one of the most dynamic in Mexico, with a strong focus on manufacturing, agriculture, and mining. The state is a major producer of automobiles, with several large assembly plants located in the capital city of Hermosillo. Sonora is also Mexico's leading producer of gold, copper, and graphite, and has a significant agricultural sector that produces wheat, vegetables, and livestock.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Sonora's culture is a blend of indigenous, Spanish, and Mexican influences. The state is known for its traditional music and dance, such as the Son Jarocho and the Danza del Venado. Sonora is also famous for its cuisine, which includes dishes like Coyotas, a type of sweet pastry, and Bacanora, a distilled agave drink.
