Sooty is a British puppet character popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries. The character is a small yellow bear with black ears and nose, known for his silent demeanor, communicating through whispers to his handler. Sooty was created by Harry Corbett in 1948, initially appearing on the BBC's TV show Magic in 1952. The character has since become a staple of British children's television, featuring in various television series, including The Sooty Show, Sooty & Co., Sooty Heights, and Sooty.

Character and Show[edit | edit source]

Sooty's character is gentle and mischievous, often getting into trouble but managing to get out of it through ingenuity and magic. His magic wand, accompanied by the phrase "Izzy wizzy, let's get busy!", is iconic. Sooty is joined by friends such as Sweep, a grey dog with a penchant for squeaking rather than speaking; Soo, a calm and sensible panda who is often the voice of reason; and later additions like Cousin Scampi, another bear who is as mischievous as Sooty.

History[edit | edit source]

Harry Corbett purchased the original Sooty puppet from a Blackpool toy shop while on holiday in 1948. The character first appeared on television in 1952 and quickly gained popularity. In 1976, Harry Corbett retired, handing over the role to his son, Matthew Corbett, who introduced new characters and expanded the show's format. Matthew Corbett retired in 1998, passing the role to Richard Cadell, who continues to perform as Sooty's handler.
